The Dolch Word List includes 220 of the most frequently used sight words. Some of these are decodable using phonics knowledge and some are not. These words make up to 75% of words used in school and library books. Students are expected to recognise these sight words by the end of Year 3.

"If a child memorises 10 words, the child can only read 10 words, but if a child learns the sounds of 10 letters the child will be able to read 350 three-sound words, 4,320 four-sound words and 21,650 five-sound words."
