THE PROGRAM

'Sounds make Words make Stories' is a structured reading program that introduces sound groups in a systematic and uncluttered way. Each self-reader book focuses only on the newly introduced sounds, together with those already learned, plus a scattering of high-frequency sight words. This scaffolded structure of the program ensures that new readers can apply their new learning immediately and eliminates them getting stuck on sounds that have not yet been learned. This ordered approach has been proven to accelerate reading capability and quickly build reading confidence.

The program is made up of three series:

  • Series 1 covers the first 44 sounds that new readers of English need to learn

  • Series 2 covers alternative long and short vowel sounds

  • Series 3 covers more complex sounds and silent letters

The program contains two levels:

  • Entry level: 12 pages of story, with short sentences and no more than 12 high-frequency sight words (in accordance with The Dolch Word List)

  • Plus level: 20 pages of story, with longer sentences and up to 20 high-frequency sight words  (in accordance with The Dolch Word List)

Each series also contains several read-aloud story books, which act as a back-drop to the self-reader books. Each read-aloud book tells a story with a moral tale which young readers can relate to. They are written in rhyme and contain a repetitive phrase that engage and encourage the audience to join in. These read-aloud books introduce fun and relatable characters which then feature in the self-reader books, which again, engage and encourage new readers to want to learn to read.

Every book contains several pages of fun and educational activities designed to both check and reinforce the reader's learning.

'Sounds make Words make Stories' has had success with young readers, stubborn readers, readers with learning difficulties and readers with English as a second language. It has been proven to be an excellent educational tool within schools as well as for home learning.
